Local telephone companies in Malaysia have been urged to be more proactive in shedding more light on their 3G services. Speaking at the official launch of Malaysia’s new 3G and mobile live TV service, “U”, Minister of Energy, Water and Communications, Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said that local Telcos should advertise products that are on offer more often. He also said that Telco’s can no longer just concentrate on coverage and interconnectivity but should also apply innovation to drive their products and services. “U”, which has inked a deal with Celcom Bhd, will provide Malaysia with its first ever domestic roaming service.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has signed an agreement with Inbox Business Technologies to acquire and deploy technical solution for addressing the menace of grey traffic brought into the country through illegal means. The contract signing ceremony was held on Friday at the PTA headquarters. Chairman PTA Major Gen (Retd) Shahzada Alam Malik presided over the ceremony. CEO Inbox Ghais Khan, Vice-president Narus James Mullins and PTA DG Wire-line Muhammad Zubair Tahir signed the contract. It was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Information Technology, PTCL, LDI operators and PTA.

There are 100s of complaints out there from users who received SMSes or charged for SMS they never requested since last year, probably there are some thousand of users out there that choose to ignore these SMSes and was not aware that they were charged for it. How long will these carry on? Is MCMC just watching or benefiting from these issues? or they are not capable of handling it? Whatever the reasons are, hundreds of Malaysians out there still get spammed today.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Saturday directed mobile various phone operators to close six franchises in different cities for bypassing to standard procedure for issuance of SIMs. The authority has issued the direction in respect of two franchises of Mobilink (Centre Point Gulberg Lahore and Haleem Telecom Al-Haj Plaza Chowk Gulabad, Peshawar), one of Ufone (Zikriya Shopping Centre, Bosan Road Multan), one of Telenor (Circular Road Lahore), one of Warid Telecom (Dar Communication Gari Shahu, Allama Iqbal Road, Lahore) and one franchise of CMPak (Paktel) (Latifabad No 7, Hyderabad).

Amid the brewing controversy surrounding the national broadband network (NBN) project of the Philippine government, China’s ZTE Corp. boasted it was able to bag several contracts in several countries in North America and South Asia, including a $478-million supply contract with the Ethiopia Telecommunication Corp. (ETC), the company said in a statement. ZTE added that China Mobile Pakistan Holding Inc. signed a contract to expand its GSM network with ZTE providing a core network of 10 million lines, more than 1,400 base stations and value-added services, the largest share of the expansion project. China Mobile, reportedly the largest mobile telecommunication operator in the world, chose to partner with ZTE for its first overseas operation, showing its high acceptance of ZTE’s overseas capabilities, the statement said. ZTE was able to secure the contract in Ethiopia with ETC last April.

New rules on next-generation networks (NGN) are due to be finalised by the end of this year, a senior telecommunications official said. Mohammad Al Ramsi, Manager for NGN at the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA), said a study is under way to unleash the power of fibre optics at homes and offices. “The next-generation network shall be used to provide different types of services such as voice, internet, television and mobile as well. The study is in progress and we are targeting to complete it by the end of this year,” Al Ramsi said.
