Syrian Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Abdullah al-Dardari, said Monday that his country welcomed more Chinese companies specialized in the telecommunication sector for investment and cooperation. Dardari made the remarks in a speech at the opening ceremony of a four-day exhibition of sophisticated wireless communications products held by China’s ZTE Corporation.

A mobile enrolment programme to register all expatriates in the private sector with the Labour Market Regulatory Authority will get under way next week, it was revealed yesterday. LMRA officials will visit major private companies to take the photographs, electronic signatures, fingerprints and other data of expatriate workers using mobile equipment, said LMRA chief executive Ali Radhi. The process started yesterday with the registration of expatriates working with the government, he told a Press conference at the LMRA headquarters in Sanabis.

UAE operator Etisalat said on Thursday it was interested in bidding for a stake in Kuwait’s third mobile phone operator to tap demand for telecoms in the Middle East’s fourth-largest oil producer.

Kuwait’s government has invited companies to express an interest in bidding for a 26% stake in the operator that it is setting up, by a September 7 deadline.

Intelligence officials fear that the Taliban may be picking up more than the information needed to frighten wives and parents, The Sun, a British newspaper, reported.

In one case, the wife of an air force officer got a middle-of-the-night call that said her husband had been killed, The Sun reported. When she called the Royal Air Force, she learned that was not true.

Jordanian Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology Basim Al-Rousan has said that Jordan is working to help Iraq rebuild its telecommunication sector.

Al-Rousan’s comment came in a press release after a recent meeting with Iraqi Communications Minister Mohammad Alawi Wednesday, where an agreement was reached concerning efforts to rebuild the telecommunications sector and benefiting from Jordan’s experience and specialization.
